They used to say, “I must have been born with a pencil in my hand.” I loved to draw. Whether it was recreating Jim Davis Comic strips, or stick figure flip motion shorts in all my textbooks, or drawing every NBA team logo for my teachers to hang around the ceiling of the classroom. I was drawing. This obsession led me to Kendall College of Art and Design. Where an elective ushered me into the basement wood shop. Where I studied under the late great Dennis Theisen. I rarely left that wood shop in my tenure.
I create beautiful things that will last forever, their owners keep them on shelves to admire and love. Loved ones are enshrined in design tailored to their constitution. I like small intimate items that compel you to touch and hold them. The silky feel of highly polished hardwood. The contrast of varying color and texture of grain. I’m intentionally heavy with layout lines for joinery and inlay. I like to see the sketch; like classical artists who leave small windows in their oil paintings of graphite beginnings. Perfect, is not without flaws when regarding wood. Knots, worm holes, and fungi stains are some of the most beautiful aspects of woodworking.
